The Vibe

An All-Inclusive Winter Ski Paradise

At Vista Verde Guest Ranch, backcountry ski touring is a hallmark winter experience, offering a perfect blend of invigorating exercise and serene tranquility. Using mid-range skis—wider and more supportive than traditional cross-country skis but lighter than telemark or AT skis—guests can explore frozen lakes, meadows, forests, and hillsides, all while taking in the breathtaking mountain views. Whether you're a novice or seasoned skier, skilled guides tailor each tour to your ability and fitness level, ensuring a safe and rewarding adventure.

Advice for Beginners

Shannan encourages newcomers to try backcountry skiing or snowshoeing. “Track skiing is more common, but there’s so much adventure off the groomed tracks,” she says. Snowshoeing is also a great option for those who may struggle with balance or the technical aspects of skiing.

Favorite Short Loop

South Fork

For low-angle Nordic touring, South Fork is Shannan’s favorite, with its variety of slopes and short distances.

Hole in the Wall or Zinc Mountain

For alpine touring (AT), she prefers Hole in the Wall or Zinc Mountain, but these require snowmobile access.

Favorite Long Loop

Pearl Lake to Vista Verde Ranch

The Pearl Lake to Vista Verde Ranch route is a favorite for its solitude and navigational challenges.

South Fork

South Fork trailhead to the Swamp Park area also offers great terrain, including the top of South Fork Peak.

Must Bring Items

Fleece-Lined Mittens

With poor circulation in her hands, Shannan relies on her fleece-lined, lightweight mittens to keep her fingers warm and functional during long days on the trail.

Breathable Layers

Lightweight, non-cotton layers are essential. Dress like you're going for a run—warm on the way up and cool on the way down. For backcountry adventures, go with soft-shell pants and jackets for extra warmth and flexibility.

Trail Etiquette

Uphill Skiers Have Right of Way

This ensures smooth navigation for all skiers on the trail.

Fat Bikers Yield to Skiers

Fat Bikers should be mindful of others on shared trails and always yield to skiers.

Nature Tips

Respect Wildlife

“Never approach them, even for a great photo,” she says. “We’re in their space, and it’s a privilege to share it.” She also encourages visitors to be mindful of the impact they have on the environment by sticking to trails and minimizing disruption to the natural surroundings.
