We sat down with Shannan Balzer, a 35-year-old Nordic skier and backcountry guide from Clark, Colorado, to learn more about her journey in the world of Nordic skiing. Working at Vista Verde Guest Ranch, Shannan has access to private skate tracks and an expansive backcountry to explore. Shannan has spent the last ten seasons guiding backcountry tours in North Routt County, leading guests on ski routes through the National Forest, and teaching them the skills needed for successful backcountry trips. Her routes range from short one-mile excursions to full-day 15-mile treks. On weekends, Shannan focuses on her own backcountry and alpine touring adventures, tackling mountains like Hahns Peak, Farwell, Buck Mountain, and Zinc Mountain. With over a decade of guiding and teaching experience, she combines her passion for outdoor adventure with sharing her knowledge of skiing, fat biking, and snowshoeing with others.

Overview—An All-Inclusive Winter Ski Paradise

At Vista Verde Guest Ranch, backcountry ski touring is a hallmark winter experience, offering a perfect blend of invigorating exercise and serene tranquility. Using mid-range skis—wider and more supportive than traditional cross-country skis but lighter than telemark or AT skis—guests can explore frozen lakes, meadows, forests, and hillsides, all while taking in the breathtaking mountain views. Whether you're a novice or seasoned skier, skilled guides tailor each tour to your ability and fitness level, ensuring a safe and rewarding adventure.

For those who prefer classic or skate skiing, Vista Verde features 15 kilometers of groomed trails suited for beginners, winding through scenic meadows, creeks, and aspen groves. Guests can access top-tier, complimentary gear at the Adventure Center, making it easy to hit the trails at any time, whether for an early morning sunrise ski or a peaceful afternoon session.

Vista Verde is more than just an adventure destination—it's an all-inclusive luxury ranch experience. Guests enjoy cozy log cabin accommodations with private hot tubs, gourmet meals, and an array of activities, all included in their stay. From skiing to dining, everything is taken care of, allowing guests to fully relax and immerse themselves in the beauty and excitement of this winter paradise.

The Vibe at Vista Verde Guest Ranch

Nestled in North Routt County, Vista Verde Guest Ranch offers a unique experience for its guests, with private skate tracks and immediate access to backcountry terrain right outside their cabins. Surrounded by over a million acres of National Forest, it’s a true Nordic and backcountry playground for skiers looking for both groomed tracks and off-piste adventures.

Trail Highlights

  • Best Short Loop: For low-angle Nordic touring, South Fork is Shannan's favorite, with its variety of slopes and short distances. For alpine touring (AT), she prefers Hole in the Wall or Zinc Mountain, but these require snowmobile access.
  • Best Long Loop: The Pearl Lake to Vista Verde Ranch route is a favorite for its solitude and navigational challenges. South Fork trailhead to the Swamp Park area also offers great terrain, including the top of South Fork Peak.

Essential Packing Tips

  • Breathable Layers: Lightweight, non-cotton layers are essential. Shannan advises dressing like you're going for a run—warm on the way up and cool on the way down. For backcountry adventures, she suggests soft-shell pants and jackets for extra warmth and flexibility.
  • Sunglasses and Sunscreen: The Colorado sun is intense, so protecting your skin and eyes is a must.
  • Backpack: Always pack extra layers, socks, water, and snacks when heading into the backcountry.

Favorite Nordic Accessory

  • Fleece-Lined Mittens: With poor circulation in her hands, Shannan relies on her fleece-lined, lightweight mittens to keep her fingers warm and functional during long days on the trail.

Locals Favorites

  • Best Grub: Salt and Lime in downtown Steamboat is a favorite for Mexican food, while Skull Creek Greek is Shannan's go-to for quick, delicious Greek fare.
  • Best Craft Beverage: Shannan loves Storm Peak Brewery, which offers a wide selection of beers on tap, as well as kombucha for those looking for non-alcoholic options.

Must Do’s

Shannan encourages everyone to sign up for a beginner skate race, even if they’re new to the sport. "The community is welcoming, and it’s a great way to feel a part of something while learning," she says. Watching experienced skiers in action is also a great way to learn and stay inspired.

Environmental Stewardship

Shannan emphasizes the importance of respecting wildlife, especially larger animals like moose and elk. “Never approach them, even for a great photo,” she says. “We’re in their space, and it’s a privilege to share it.” She also encourages visitors to be mindful of the impact they have on the environment by sticking to trails and minimizing disruption to the natural surroundings.

Must-Know Trail Etiquette

  • Uphill Skiers Have Right of Way: This ensures smooth navigation for all skiers on the trail.
  • Fat Bikers Yield to Skiers: Fat Bikers should be mindful of others on shared trails and always yield to skiers.

Advice for Beginners

Shannan encourages newcomers to try backcountry skiing or snowshoeing. “Track skiing is more common, but there’s so much adventure off the groomed tracks,” she says. Snowshoeing is also a great option for those who may struggle with balance or the technical aspects of skiing. For fat biking, spring mornings provide the perfect conditions when the snow is hard-packed, making it easier to ride.

Sound Advice

For anyone planning a Nordic skiing trip to Colorado, Shannan advises giving yourself time to acclimate to the altitude. Bring breathable layers, sunscreen, sunglasses, and plenty of water. And most importantly, come ready to explore and enjoy the stunning terrain.
