Here’s the thing: Too many skiers start to taper and disappear JUST when the getting gets really, really good. Long, bluebird days, a reliable snow base, and cold night/warm day temps are setting up some of the best skiing we’ve seen all year (especially for you skaters—it’s on!).
So here’s a list of some of our favorite getaways to rev you back up just in time for spring break.
Destination: Far from the Madding Crowds
Seek out: Grand Lake Nordic, Tennessee Pass
These two outposts are plenty out of the way, far from the 1-70 hordes, and cater to skiers who are all about the beauty of the trails.
Highlights: Grand Lake is a hidden gem with excellent grooming, and instead of long grinding climbs, you’ll find a maze-like trail system of short and rolling hills that winds like a roller-coaster ride. Pure joy! At Tennessee Pass, don’t miss the excellent onsite restaurant—rustic gourmet with a laid-back vibe.
Stay: Tennessee Pass has luxury yurts; in Grand Lake, try the historic Rapids Lodge and Restaurant.
Destination: Off-the-grid luxury
Seek out: Home Ranch, Latigo Ranch, Vista Verde Ranch, Devil’s Thumb Ranch
Even 24 hours at a guest ranch makes you feel like you’ve left the real world behind. At these resorts you’ll find crackling fires and high-thread-count sheets, with groomed Nordic trails just outside your door.
Highlights: Most of these guest ranches (except for Devil’s Thumb) are all-inclusive. Want to ride? Your horse awaits. Angler? Guided fly-fishing, no problem. Hungry after a sweaty 20K? Help yourself to another locally raised steak or whiskey on the rocks. It’s all set up to be a no-brainer where you’re totally taken care of.
Stay: Rates include lodging, meals and activities, and most ranches do require a minimum stay. All resorts are open to day-use from skiers with purchase of a trail pass.
Destination: Ski Country
Seek out: Beaver Creek Nordic Center, Vail Nordic Center, Keystone Nordic Center, Breckenridge Nordic Center
Face it, many of us spend time on alpine and Nordic skis (or at least have to keep up with kids who do). Here’s how to work in some ski time on both fat and skinnies.
Highlights: Not only do these resorts share or nestle up to the big downhill resort amenities—lodging, restaurants, parking, rentals—but they also share the same big snow conditions. They’re a great way to enjoy a major ski town destination without the major crowds and price tags.
Stay: Sure, airbnb is tempting, but cleaning fees etc. can spike prices for a shorter trip. Instead, take advantage of these ski areas’ central reservation services. Plenty have packages that include lodging and lift tickets or discounts for children.
